- The goal of the seminar is exchanging experiences about process of forming landscapes values, comparing the UNESCO’s and European Landscape Convention’s approaches. In the first case the process of forming value starts, above all, from experts, we can say “from the top”, instead the aim of the European Landscape Convention is to set up practices “from the bottom”, from civil society.

- The crucial issue is represented by a difficult relationship between preserving/transforming landscapes, integrating the economic, environmental and social dimensions.

- The point of view of the current proposal is achieving a more responsible use of natural and cultural landscapes, balancing preservation with transformation in a frame of sustainable development.

- In those terms the role of  the information is fundamental. We can see the question referring to the function of the media in forming ideas, opinions, supporting choices but, on the other hand, by means of all those representation devices useful to make people aware of their cultural heritage, starting up participatory practices.

 - We have different situations in European countries; in Italy, for example,  people is not still involved in decision making about changes of landscapes, a few pilot actions are starting (Progetto Paesaggio Biellese, Parco del Cilento...). In other countries, like Estonia or France, there is running a process of taking part in decisions about landscapes.

- The seminar will compare practices in participatory process in various UE countries.

- To this end, we can today well supported by new technologies, not only media but such innovative devices, as “Participatory GIS” for example, whose use maybe a useful answer to the requirement of innovation promoted by UE. Representation devices can help us precisely to sort out landscape heritage and its potentialities overtaking or integrating 2d maps with photographs, sketches, schemes, 3D drawings, GIS; using 3d representations or visual simulation of urban landscapes, finding out communicative codes for people and not for experts only.
